How To Introduce Your Pets To A New Baby

Introducing a new baby to your pets is an exciting transition, but it can also be a big adjustment for them. Dogs and cats thrive on routine, so preparing them before the baby arrives can help everyone feel more comfortable.

🐾 Before the Baby Arrives

  • Gradually adjust routines. If feeding, walking, or playtime will change, start making those changes before the baby comes home.
  • Introduce baby sounds and smells. Play recordings of crying or other baby noises at a low volume and gradually increase it. Let your pet sniff baby lotion, shampoo, or a blanket that smells like the baby.
  • Practice boundaries. If your pet won’t be allowed in the nursery, crib, or certain furniture once the baby arrives, establish those rules ahead of time.
  • Reward calm behavior. Use treats and praise when your pet remains relaxed around new sights, sounds, and smells.

👶 The First Introduction

When you bring your baby home, try to keep the first meeting calm and controlled.

  1. Greet your pet without the baby first if possible. This gives them a chance to settle down after the excitement of your arrival.
  2. Keep your pet on a leash during the first introduction with your baby.
  3. Allow your pet to observe from a comfortable distance. Don’t force them to approach.
  4. Reward calm, gentle behavior with praise or a favorite treat.
  5. Keep the first interaction short and gradually increase the amount of time your pet spends around the baby.

❤️ Give Your Pet Attention, Too

It’s easy for a pet to feel left out when a new baby gets most of the attention. Try to maintain some of their normal activities, including walks, playtime, cuddling, and feeding routines. Even a few minutes of one-on-one attention can make a difference.

⚠️ Safety Comes First

Never leave a baby and pet together unsupervised—even if your pet has always been gentle and trustworthy. Use baby gates, crates, closed doors, or other barriers when you can’t actively supervise them.

With preparation, patience, and positive reinforcement, your pet can learn that the new baby is a welcome addition to the family. 🐶🐱👶❤️
